Harry Seidler

1923-2006

Harry Seidler was born and raised in Vienna. During the occupation of the Nazi in Austria, Seidler fled to England and attended school at Cambridge. He was interned during the Second World War and was sent to Canada. As Seidler was imprisoned, he spent his time studying with his inmates who were architects and historians. Soon after release, he enrolled in a school of architecture, University of Manitoba. Later, he studied under Bauhaus exile Walter Gropius at Harvard on a scholarship. After graduating from Harvard, Seidler attended Black Mountain College under Gropius’ suggestion

In 1946, Harry Seidler arrived in Australia that offered he and his family a new beginning. His very first project was the infamous Rose Seidler House in Turramurra, ultimately led to Seidler staying in Sydney. Other notable works include Harry and Penelope Seidler House in Killara, Horizon Apartments, QV1 Office Towers...

In 1976, Harry Seidler was the recipient of a gold medal from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.Furthermore, Harry Seidler was awarded of the Gold Medal of Vienna in 1989.In the same year, he won 1st prize Marble Architectural Awards. Other than that, he received five Sir John Sulman Medals awarded by the RAIA. As well as a Royal Gold Medal in 1996 and many other awards.

During his life span, he encountered a number of architects that became mentors, guiding and educating his design and also working together. Gropius influenced introduce a method of approach which allows one to tackle a problem according to peculiar conditions.The Rose Seidler House was a starting point in modern architectural design in Australia,distinct from the traditional brick house. Seidler was known to collaborate with visual artists around the world. He integrated artworks such as Le Corbusier’s tapestry, which is ones featured at the lobby of Australia Square.[DW]
